Alternative Cinema aspires to represent National Cinema in Bangladesh. On the other hand, the problematic term “Art Cinema” is tagged on its forefront. How does this cinema of the margin balance the existence between these two paradoxical positions? It is more pertinent to ask if alternative cinema can be distinguished as a singular cinematic trait at this time of myriad possibilities in the film bazaar. It has been more than three decades now, that the alternative cinema began its formal journey here. The movement; initially in the form of collective activism and later more as a trend practiced by like-minded and not so like-minded individuals; strategized, wrangled, probed, provocated and survived. This book argues that alternative cinema indeed sows the seed of national cinema in Bangladesh. It portrays the collective dream of the people, explores pristine history of the land, nurtures experiment with local visual sensitivities and asks questions that are relevant to the society, politics and philosophy of this delta. The book is a chronicle of this saga.

গত শতকের চল্লিশের দশক নাগাদ শব্দ যুক্ত হওয়ার এক দশকের মধ্যে চলচ্চিত্র একটি সাধারণ ভাষায় স্থিত হয়েছিল। সত্যজিৎ রায় সেই সব চলচ্চিত্রকারের অন্যতম যাঁরা এই সাধারণ ভাষায় তাঁদের চলচ্চিত্রকথা রচনা করেছেন। পঞ্চাশের দশকের মাঝামাঝি শুরু হয়ে প্রায় চার দশক ধরে নির্মিত হয়েছে ইমেজ-শব্দের এক ধনী ভাণ্ডার; সূক্ষ্ম সংবেদী চিত্রালাপ-ব্যক্তি আর সমাজ প্রসঙ্গে।
এখন, এই বছর, তাঁর জন্মশতবর্ষে পৌঁছে এইসব ছবি কি অতিক্রান্ত কোনো ধ্রুপদী নির্মাণ? আমরা, বাঙালিরা, উপমহাদেশের চলচ্চিত্রজন, কী সাজিয়ে রেখেছি এইসব আশ্চর্য সম্ভার আমাদের সন্তর্পণ কোনো চেতনে? যা হয় অনচ্ছ প্রেরণা এবং গর্বিত এক বোধ আমাদের চলচ্চিত্র-ইতিহাসের ভেতর থেকে উৎসারিত? না কি, সমকালের পাঠে তারা প্রাসঙ্গিক; প্রখর তারা রাজনীতি এবং ব্যক্তির বীক্ষণে; সামাজিক সংলাপে এবং ইতিহাস খননে? এইসব চিন্তা ক্রমাগত কাজ করে চলেছে এই গ্রন্থের হয়ে ওঠার প্রক্রিয়ায়।
সত্যজিৎ রায়ের গল্প আর সংলাপের নুয়ান্স, সূক্ষ্ম ডিটেইলের কাজ, তাঁর ভারসাম্যময় কম্পোজিশন, সংযমী সম্পাদনা নিয়ে প্রচলিত মুগ্ধ উচ্চারণের বাইরে এই চলচ্চিত্রপঞ্জি নিয়ে আর কোনো পঠন প্রক্রিয়ার মধ্যে কি প্রবেশ করা যায়? পুঁজিবাদী বিচ্ছিন্নতা, আরবান গেরিলাযুদ্ধ, বিশ শতকের নতুন তরুণের লিবিডো অথবা নাগরিকদের নৈতিকতার সংকট নিয়ে তাঁর কাছে যাওয়া যায় কি? এসব খতিয়ে দেখতে দেখতে প্রায় তিরিশ বছর ধরে এই গ্রন্থের নির্মাণ। চেষ্টা করা গেছে সত্যজিৎ রায়ের ধ্রুপদী ঐশ্বর্য এবং কালাতিক্রমী প্রাসঙ্গিকতার এক কম্পোজিট পাঠ উপস্থাপনের।
